Another week, another new eatery added to the downtown Dallas neighborhood! Tortaco comes to us from he culinary imagination of award-winning Chef Nico Sanchez of Meso Maya (another fave restaurant of mine), and boasts an inventive menu of unique tortas, tacos, and bowls.
Tortaco is located at 2100 Ross in the space previously occupied by Stephan Pyles’ San Savaje. The label-defying interior – an offbeat fusion of hipster hangout, elevated biker bar and tattoo parlor – showcases a three-sided bar stocked with more than 90 mezcals and tequilas, from which expert mixologists create a wide selection of handcrafted premium mezcal cocktails. Suspended Edison bulbs illuminate the exposed, industrial-chic space, distressed concrete floors and funky furnishings. A spectacular street-side, open-air patio is perfect for lunch, after-work happy hours, relaxed dining and late-night cocktails.
I took their imaginative menu for a spin and walked away a new fan of Tortas, or a fire-roasted artisan sandwiches! The menu basically features different dishes and gives you the option to have the creation inside a taco or torta. My definite favorite was the Truffle Steak that I chose to have inside a torta. It was filled with tender seared beef tenderloin, black truffle aioli, fresh tomato, carmelized onions, Vermont sharp white cheddar, wild baby arugula and cremini mushrooms.
Can we also talk about how delicious the “other stuff” portion of the menu is. We started the meal with the most delicious and creamy Roasted Crab Dip full of jumbo lump crab, melted port salute, cheddar cheese, and roasted jalapeños, served with crusty fire-roasted bread. Our meal concluded with the Creamy Date Dessert, Tortaco’s one and only dessert offering. It’s that good. This homemade date cake is topped with mascarpone, toasted Texas pecans and a warm maple caramel sauce – it’s perfect for sharing!
